  12. RasterOps Announces Graphics Accelerator Board

  14. San Francisco, CA--April 11, 1990--RasterOps Corporation, a leader in color
  15. display technology for the Macintosh, today announced the RasterOps
  16. Accelerator, a high performance graphics board designed to make 24-bit color,
  17. graphics-intensive applications work faster and more smoothly.  Typical
  18. application marketplaces that require this performance include graphic design,
  19. pre-press and image manipulation.

  21.    By taking advantage of RasterOps' custom VLSI chip technology, the Accelerat
  22. offers unique advantages, such as a flexible architecture that allows on-board
  23. memory expansion up to 16 megabytes.  The Accelerator increases overall
  24. application performance by intercepting a set of QuickDraw graphics functions
  25. and simplifying them for rapid transfer to the screen — analagous to RISC
  26. operations.

  28.    The board can be upgraded with the RasterOps Accelerator DRAM Expansion Kit
  29. that applications that use larger off-screen bitmaps can address the additional
  30. memory for a significant increase in speed.

  32.    "The key to this product is the memory buffer for off-screen to on-screen
  33. acceleration," said John Barco, product manager at RasterOps.  "Users of
  34. layout, design and imaging applications, particularly when using large, 24-bit
  35. color images, can benefit immediately from this solution."

  37.    The Accelerator takes advantage of Block Mode Transfer to move data to the
  38. display board.  Display boards using this mode can move data at a rate up to 36
  39. megabytes per second, while non-Block Mode Transfer boards will also benefit in
  40. performance speed.
  41.  In addition, the Accelerator works as a Bus Master capable of accelerating all
  42. the display boards in any Macintosh II system, including the new Macintosh
  43. IIfx.

  45.    The Accelerator is designed to work with display systems in 8-bit to 32-bit
  46. modes.  Suggested retail price is $495.  The RasterOps Accelerator 4 MB DRAM
  47. Expansion Kit (4 -1 MB SIMMs) will have a suggested retail price of $745.  The
  48. RasterOps Accelerator 16 MB DRAM Expansion Kit  (4 - 4 MB SIMMs) will have a
  49. suggested retail price of $4745.
